The Write Time

What happens when we allow our writing to be transformed?

You know those days when when it feels like a drag - not the 'write' time. When we wait for inspiration to come, when we decide it's just a hobby anyway, that we'll only do it for fun?

But deeper inside we know we want more than that.

We feel it in our heart - 'this is what I want' it whispers. 'This is rightfully yours - always has been, always will be'.

And so we feel the call to move our hobby beyond its amateur characteristics - to see how and where it extends.

One word in front of another, one day, one page at a time.

Writing as exploration, as discovery, as art form, as duty to God, as profession. It's a shift in perception we experience.

From ego-fulfilling to open co-creation with the universe.

And so our hand that writes becomes wholly. It's the top of the iceberg - the visible, physical part that transmits nature's messages and the signs of the spirit.

Writing, as a whole, becomes our job, our work, our spiritual practice. We fit it in, commit to it - multiple times each day, in between interruptions from our children and distraction from others.
What becomes important is that we return to it, again and again, until we've had our say for the day.

This is our job - and by hand, by thumb, by fingers - we are transformed by our writing.

Are you hiding behind your books?

I'm exploring a new way of writing, which is really a new way of creating, a new way of living.

Bear with me as I paint a picture for you...

I've been writing from my soul much more lately, with as much flow as I'm given. I write what feels personally important, what's calling me, without question. I just get it out there.

And a funny thing's been happening.

You know I used to read a lot - self help books, personal transformation books, cutting edge thoughts, programs etc - to ingest others' ideas in order to get through a problem and move forward.

But the last few years have brought a shift - I'm reading less and writing more.

I'm looking inwards for answers and giving them to the world, rather than looking to others for answers and assimilating them within.

It's a subtle and profound shift.

It seems that there's a time for learning from others before you, and a time for pushing forward, over the edge and into new territory, carving a path where none previously existed.

A path based on faith and trust - a co-created way forward for all.

So, some questions and thoughts for you - Transformed Mamas, Teachers and Lovelies....

Are you hiding behind your books?

Are they, in fact, holding back your creativity?

What would happen if you put the self help books away and trusted yourself instead? What if you embraced the wobbly emptiness of that void and stepped up anyway?

The power of expectations

"Never underestimate the power of expectation"

I read this quote in the staff room of Rosie's primary school this week. And, being a teacher myself, I thought about how true this was for me back in my classrooms and how true it is for me now as a Mama. Often when I'm finding myself clashing with one or both of my daughters (or with my Ian), its a matter of increasing my expectations of them that leads to greater confidence on their part, and then more responsibility. In other words, I don't need to take on everything. They are more than capable of doing a lot of stuff themselves and its not my job to be a martyr. After that I can step back, breathe more freely again, and be a better Mama for them.

And then, as this Mama is wont to do, I began to analyse this quote a little more. What if the said expectations were unrealistic or unhelpful? What if they lead to pain and suffering?

Now this wasn't just an idle thought, no. You see I've been waning these past few days. You may have noticed a lack of blog posts, little writing and certainly little meaningful content. All I've been able to manage on some days is to look at my desk and sigh. On other days I've added a photo. Usually taken by someone else. At other times I've sat down to what I can only describe as writer's block. Then last night I just wanted to yell. At anyone. For anything. And at the bakery this morning I was teary and tired...

Clearly I need a break.

And so I've adjusted my expectations. For the next couple of weeks I'm not expecting myself to write a post for everyday and this week I'm not expecting myself to review a book or a blog. I may post a photo if I feel like it and perhaps I might write if the inspiration strikes. But for now this Mama needs some rest and some time to imagine some new directions....

Peace to you dear readers...

My vision board - the next couple of weeks are all about adding to this, imagining new directions, getting clear about the directions I'm already heading in and basically spring cleaning this Mama from Mount Beauty.

Why I blog

"We should write because its human nature to write" - Julia Cameron

Writing has always been an integral part of my life - from lists to letters, from essays to theses - writing helps me to make sense of all my ideas and lets me see the big picture, as well as the minute detail.
For a while, as post-natal depression took hold of my life for about 5 years, I found words around me overwhelming - particularly commercialism, news, signs and information - and I found myself shutting off from that outlet.
Now I find myself writing once again. Not to be anything or tick any boxes for anyone else, but to simply be with my words and ideas.

"We make a big deal out of putting words on paper instead of simply releasing them to the air" - Julia Cameron, The Right to Write: An Invitation and Initiation into the Writing Life.

That's why I blog - because it releases my thoughts into the blogosphere and lets them circulate there, rather than just in my head. And I can come back to them if I like. Or not if I don't.

For me this blog has many purposes:

Its an organiser - to help instil ritual into my week (see Friday Blog reviews)
Its a gift - a chance to give to others (my family, friends, like-minded readers) through photos and information (see Rosie's cardigan)
It a good place to brainstorm - a chance to read, review and organise my thoughts and ideas (see my post on the role of a supportive parent)
Its a celebration - 'Look at what we've achieved' (see A Birthday for Bethany)
Its a diary - e.g. the camper trailer logbook, observations of our days (see Slow travel in Sleepy Bay).

Happy reading (and writing)...
